
Margaret Maina is a water and sanitation leader, water chemist, and public health professional with over 18 years of executive experience in utility management. As Executive Officer of WIWAS, she champions gender inclusion, safe sanitation, and professional development across the water sector in Kenya and beyond.
Margaret Maina serves as the Executive Officer of the Women in Water and Sanitation Association (WIWAS). She previously spent 18 years as the Founding Managing Director of Limuru Water and Sewerage Company, where she led the development and operational growth of the utility.
A water chemist by profession, Margaret holds a Bachelor of Philosophy in Technology (Applied Biology) from the Technical University of Kenya and a Master’s Degree in Public Health, specializing in Epidemiology and Disease Control, from Kenyatta University.
She is an Advisory Board Member for the Inclusive Urban Sanitation Initiative of the International Water Association (IWA) and serves on the Strategic Council of the African Water and Sanitation Association (AFWASA). She is also a member of the Water Sector Advisory Committee under the TVET Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council (TVET-CDACC), contributing to curriculum development for the Kenya Water Institute.
As a founding member of WIWAS, Margaret continues to champion gender inclusion and leadership within the water and sanitation sector. She is a former Trustee of the Water Services Providers Association (WASPA) and the Local Authorities Pension Trust (LAPTRUST/CPF).
Margaret is deeply passionate about women’s empowerment, youth mentorship, environmental stewardship, and advocating for safe sanitation and the dignified treatment of manual pit emptiers working in low-income urban communities.
