Salim Gobu Bute is a water and sanitation engineering technologist trained at the Kenya Water Institute. He combines technical expertise in water treatment and sanitation systems with practical community education, helping improve water quality and system reliability in low-resource settings.
Salim Gobu Bute is a graduate of the Kenya Water Institute with specialized training in water treatment processes and sanitation system design. He has worked on the frontline of water provision, supporting the setup of small water treatment plants, optimizing community boreholes, and ensuring systems operate safely and efficiently.
Known for his hands-on approach to problem-solving, Salim is skilled in plant operation, chemical dosing, water quality testing, and pump maintenance. Whether constructing simple gravel-and-sand filtration systems or troubleshooting chlorination units, he finds practical and resourceful ways to improve water quality in challenging environments.
Salim is also passionate about community education. He regularly shares practical demonstrations showing how to purify water using locally available materials, including guides for building natural water filters with gravel, charcoal, and sand. He has participated in training rural water user committees on maintaining pumps and sanitation facilities, focusing on both practical skills and long-term sustainability.
He has contributed to international WASH initiatives, including assisting with on-site water testing and sanitation audits during the Ethiopia WASH Survey. Salim is an active member of Needs 4 Water’s Kenya chapter and continues to support sustainable, community-driven WASH solutions.
