Fana Mojo Primary School, located in Oromia Region, is a major educational institution with 3,163 students and 85 staff—making it one of the largest schools in the Ethiopia 2025 WASH Survey. Its size presents significant challenges for maintaining water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services at a level that meets the needs of every learner.

Needs4Water’s Project 12 team conducted a detailed site assessment, combining infrastructure inspections, student interviews, and water quality checks. Despite the school’s critical role in the community, findings revealed stretched resources: sanitation facilities were overcrowded, water storage insufficient during dry periods, and soap often missing from handwashing stations.

Students and staff shared how these limitations affected daily routines, particularly for girls and younger children who require more frequent and private access to hygiene facilities. Nevertheless, school leadership demonstrated strong commitment to improving WASH conditions and worked closely with the survey team to highlight pressing needs.

Project 12’s findings from Fana Mojo underscore the importance of scaling WASH infrastructure in proportion to school growth. Recommendations include constructing additional gender-segregated latrines, increasing water storage capacity, and securing consistent hygiene supply chains. These improvements are vital to protect student health and support equitable learning in Ethiopia’s high-enrolment primary schools.
