Project 12 assessed WASH conditions for 485 students at Gamo Bayra Boarding School near Arba Minch, identifying key needs in water access, sanitation, and boarding hygiene support.
Gamo Bayra Boarding Secondary School, situated near Arba Minch in Southern Ethiopia, serves 485 students and 29 staff. As a full-time boarding institution, the school presents unique WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) challenges, as students live on campus and rely entirely on school facilities for their daily needs.
During the Ethiopia 2025 WASH Survey, Needs4Water conducted a detailed assessment of the school's water supply, sanitation infrastructure, and hygiene practices. The team gathered feedback from students and staff, inspected living quarters, and documented the condition of shared facilities used for cleaning, cooking, and drinking water.
Although the school operates with limited resources, staff and students have made efforts to maintain basic hygiene practices. However, consistent access to clean water, functional toilets, and handwashing supplies remains a challenge—especially during the dry season or in times of resource strain.
