Project 12 evaluated WASH conditions for 1,851 students at Kurkura Lafto Primary in Oromia, identifying gaps in sanitation access, water reliability, and the availability of hygiene supplies.
Kurkura Lafto Primary School, located in Ethiopia’s Oromia Region, serves 1,851 students and 43 staff. As part of the Ethiopia 2025 WASH Survey, Needs4Water conducted a comprehensive site assessment to better understand the challenges this growing school faces in delivering basic water, sanitation, and hygiene services.
The team inspected existing infrastructure, interviewed students and teachers, and reviewed the condition and functionality of handwashing stations, toilet facilities, and water points. While some WASH elements were in place, the size of the student population put considerable pressure on available resources, especially during high-demand periods like break times and lunch.
Sanitation blocks were overcrowded, and hygiene materials such as soap were inconsistently available. Teachers highlighted the impact of water interruptions on both school operations and student health, with occasional class disruptions due to lack of clean water.
Project 12’s findings at Kurkura Lafto underscore the need for both infrastructure investment and operational support, particularly in expanding sanitation capacity, reinforcing water storage, and ensuring reliable supply chains for soap and hygiene materials. These improvements will help create a healthier, more supportive environment for students to learn, thrive, and grow.
