Menelik II Secondary School

Project 12 launched at Menelik II School, Ethiopia’s first modern school, collecting WASH data to improve hygiene, water, and sanitation for over 2,260 students.

Needs4Water

Needs4Water officially launched the Ethiopia 2025 WASH Survey—Project 12—at Menelik II School in Addis Ababa, a school of historic national significance. Founded in 1908 by Emperor Menelik II, the school holds the distinction of being Ethiopia’s first modern educational institution. With a student population exceeding 2,260, it was an ideal location to initiate the nationwide survey.

The survey team collected comprehensive baseline data on water availability, sanitation infrastructure, and hygiene practices, using internationally recognized metrics. These insights will not only benefit Menelik II School, but also contribute to a broader understanding of school WASH conditions across Ethiopia.
