Mojo Primary School

Project 12 assessed WASH access for 2,448 students at Mojo Primary in Oromia, identifying service strain, infrastructure gaps, and opportunities for targeted investment and hygiene education.

Mojo Primary School, located in Ethiopia’s Oromia Region, is one of the largest institutions surveyed in the Ethiopia 2025 WASH initiative. With 2,448 students and 80 staff, the school operates under considerable pressure to meet daily water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) needs.

As part of Project 12, Needs4Water conducted a comprehensive assessment of facility conditions, water reliability, and hygiene behaviour across the school. Enumerators interviewed students and teachers, inspected latrine blocks and handwashing stations, and documented infrastructure functionality and usage patterns.

The survey revealed that although the school maintains basic WASH infrastructure, capacity is strained due to the large student population. Latrines were often overcrowded and handwashing stations lacked consistent supplies of water and soap. Seasonal water shortages further challenge routine cleaning and personal hygiene, increasing the risk of absenteeism and illness.

Despite these constraints, staff were actively engaged in supporting hygiene awareness and expressed a clear desire for structural improvements. Project 12’s findings emphasize the urgent need for scalable interventions: additional sanitation facilities, reinforced water supply systems, and reliable hygiene materials distribution. These steps are critical to safeguarding student health and supporting effective learning at Mojo Primary and similar high-enrolment schools across Oromia.
