Supporting Water System Strengthening in Ghana
Almaquin Supports OWB Assessment with Field-Based Expertise
Strengthening urban water systems depends on practical assessment, local collaboration, and shared learning. In late 2025, Almaquin Enterprises assisted Operators Without Borders (OWB) in the development of a comprehensive Water Treatment and Distribution Infrastructure Assessment for Ghana Water Limited (GWL).
OWB deployed a volunteer team to Ghana to conduct site visits and operational reviews across key facilities in the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions. The assessment examined treatment operations, distribution practices, safety, laboratory quality assurance, asset condition, and workforce capacity, with the goal of supporting targeted training and long-term operational improvement.
Among the volunteer team was Asmahan Rabo of Needs4Water, whose participation brought added depth in water quality assurance, laboratory practices, and operator-focused capacity building. Working alongside OWB colleagues and GWL staff, the team emphasized peer exchange, practical observation, and respect for local expertise.
The assessment highlighted strong commitment and technical capability within GWL, alongside opportunities to modernize data use, strengthen documentation, enhance safety systems, and advance Non-Revenue Water reduction efforts. Recommendations focus on achievable steps that build on existing strengths, support staff development, and align operations with future investment.
For Almaquin, supporting this work reflects a continued commitment to operator-to-operator collaboration. By contributing field experience and technical perspective, Almaquin helps translate assessment findings into practical direction that utilities can carry forward. The Ghana engagement reinforces a shared objective across OWB, local partners, and volunteers: reliable water services supported by capable people and resilient systems.
