Frequent pump outages limit water access at Time’s Choice Academy, affecting meals and attendance. Project 12 found hygiene efforts in place but critical gaps in sanitation and reliability.
Akkaadaamii Taayimsi Chooyis (Time’s Choice Academy), located in Ethiopia, serves 1,221 students and 60 staff. Though the school has an on-site borehole, water access remains unreliable. Students reported that the pump only works consistently about half the week due to frequent outages and power cuts. During the dry season, these shortages become more severe, leading to shortened school days when drinking water and meals cannot be provided, indirectly reducing student attendance.
During the Ethiopia 2025 WASH Survey, the Needs4Water team assessed the school’s infrastructure and hygiene practices. Only one of the two boys' 4-bay latrines was functional at the time of the visit, limiting available sanitation options. However, the team was encouraged to observe students using soap at handwashing stations, a positive sign of ongoing hygiene education.
