In Arba Minch, Project 12 assessed WASH conditions for 1,486 students at Yetneberish Primary, identifying gaps in sanitation, hygiene access, and the need for stronger water system reliability.
Yetneberish Primary School, located in Arba Minch in Southern Ethiopia, is a large public school serving 1,486 students and 46 staff. As part of the Ethiopia 2025 WASH Survey, Needs4Water conducted a full-site evaluation to understand the school’s water, sanitation, and hygiene environment.
The team carried out structured interviews with students and teachers, inspected sanitation blocks, and documented the state of water access and handwashing facilities. The school struggles with typical urban-edge infrastructure challenges including intermittent water supply, limited latrine availability, and gaps in daily hygiene materials such as soap.
Despite efforts from staff to maintain cleanliness and ensure water availability, the needs exceed available resources. During peak enrollment periods or dry spells, the situation worsens, impacting the health, safety, and attendance of students, particularly girls.
