Carter Klanderud brings engineering education, water quality research, and treatment experience to Almaquin’s water and wastewater team. He applies sampling, laboratory analysis, and process monitoring skills while building on earlier municipal engineering work and developing practical experience in industrial wastewater operations.
Carter’s work with Almaquin connects his academic background with daily treatment operations. During an industrial wastewater treatment rotation, he conducted plant checks, collected samples across treatment stages, and tested total suspended solids. He monitored process conditions and helped troubleshoot polymer-feed and dissolved air flotation equipment problems with guidance from experienced operators. His responsibilities included recording operating parameters and communicating equipment concerns and process interruptions.
His research examines source water quality and its implications for drinking water treatment. Carter’s work includes studying organic carbon, cyanobacteria, and changes in water quality following wildfire. He developed sampling plans, coordinated fieldwork with water utilities, analyzed laboratory and field data, and investigated methods for preserving water samples. His reservoir research in Fort McMurray involved collecting and interpreting data in partnership with a drinking water utility.
Carter’s engineering internships provided experience in municipal water and wastewater treatment and utility infrastructure. His assignments included chemical testing to support nutrient reduction strategies, lift station inventories, and preparation of preliminary engineering reports and facility plans. He supported treatment plant construction projects and used geographic information systems to collect, organize, and communicate infrastructure information.
Technical communication forms another part of Carter’s background. As a teaching assistant at the University of Waterloo, he supported students studying biological processes for wastewater engineering and helped strengthen their technical report writing. His university work included course development, engineering leadership activities, and presentations on water quality research. He received the University of Waterloo’s Teaching Assistant Excellence Award.
Carter holds a Master of Applied Science in Civil Engineering (Water) from the University of Waterloo and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, with a focus on environmental engineering, from Iowa State University. Through Almaquin, he is building on this education with practical operating experience across water and wastewater treatment.
